Board Resources

At The CBO Center, we recognize the vital role that volunteer board members play in the life of a nonprofit organization. We also know, from our personal experience and work with hundreds of boards, that boards often lack the training and resources required to be as effective as they would like.

We offer a complete array of programs and services to support individual board members and the board team in providing the leadership and oversight great organizations require.

If you have questions about any of our resources for boards, or if you have a question or concern you’d like to discuss with a governance expert, don’t hesitate to contact us.

BoardWorks™

These are the board trainings you’ve been waiting for!

The CBO Center’s popular workshop series is designed specifically for current and potential board members who have never served on a board OR have never had a formal training in the basics of board work OR could just use a refresher. We encourage executive directors and boards members to come to the training together.

Our approach is based on best practices that are common to highly functioning boards, all drawn from the work of several of the field’s best thinkers and consultants: BoardSource, McKinsey & Company’s Institute for the Nonprofit Sector, Jim Collins (From Good to Great), Richard Chait (Governance as Leadership), and Jude Kaye, nationally respected author, trainer, and consultant. You will also get the benefit of the experience of The CBO Center’s senior staff who have trained and consulted with hundreds of boards and board members over the past two decades.

  • BoardWorks™: Three Hours to Better Governance

  • This workshop is designed specifically for board members and executive directors who find themselves struggling over who is supposed to do what: Is the board responsible for the strategic plan or is staff? How exactly is the board supposed to supervise the e.d. when board members aren't there on a daily basis? Are executive directors really expected to report to 12 bosses? And what the heck is governance anyway?

In three hours, participants will learn the roles and responsibilities of the board as a governing body, the difference between the work of the board and the work of individual board members, the differences between board and staff functions, and some practical tips and tools that will help board members serve their agencies more effectively.

  • BoardWorks™: Three Hours to Better Financial Oversight

It is designed specifically for current and potential board members who want to learn more about fiduciary oversight and what it means; currently serve on the finance committee or are being asked to serve; and/or don't really understand nonprofit financial statements and are afraid to ask

In three hours, participants will learn the roles and responsibilities of the finance committee, the relationship between the work of the entire board and the work of the finance committee, the differences between board and staff functions, and some practical tips and tools that will help board members serve their agencies and finance staff more effectively.

This training is a collaboration between The CBO Center and Pacific Training and Resources Senior Finance Consultant Jennie Brick.
