This national magazine on grants and giving has made its informative articles, a searchable guide to grants, and a host of other information available online. Some material is free, most requires a password. If you are already a subscriber to the Chronicle, you can ask for a password.

East Bay Funders Directory
This online directory is available via the CompassPoint website. Searching hint: if you’re looking for a particular family foundation and the search returns no results, try searching by the last name. For example, instead of typing in “Y&H Soda Foundation” in the search box, type in “Soda, Y&H.”

Community Wealth
These consultants are interested in helping you generate revenue, not raise funds. Among other things, they offer the first national directory of social enterprise, a searchable database of successful social enterprises around the country. If you’re thinking about developing mission-linked revenue streams, this is a valuable site. Community Wealth is presented by Save Our Strength, a Washington, DC-based anti-hunger and anti-poverty organization, and its consulting arm, Community Wealth Ventures.

The California Endowment
The Endowment awards grants to organizations that directly benefit and health and well-being of the people of California. Key areas of interest include multicultural health, access to health care, and health and well-being. No grants are made to individuals.

East Bay Community Foundation
The East Bay Community Foundation, serving Contra Costa and Alameda counties, is the oldest community-based philanthropic organization in Northern California. EBCF manages 500 funds and in 2001/02 granted $14.4M to nonprofit organizations.

Nonprofit Finance Fund
Nonprofit Finance Fund is a national leader in social enterprise finance, with a long track record as "investment banker" to small and mid-sized nonprofit community-based organizations.  NFF works with nonprofits and their funders to build capacity t hrough mutually reinforcing direct financing, advisory services, partnerships and advocacy.  NFF focuses on organizations serving low- and moderate- income people and communities. 

Roberts Enterprise Development Fund
The Roberts Enterprise Development Fund (REDF) “creates opportunities for homeless and low income individuals to move out of poverty. They partner with a portfolio of San Francisco Bay Area nonprofits to create jobs and training opportunities in social purpose enterprises. In those partnerships, they offer financial support, business assistance, human and intellectual capital and other customized support to build capacity.” This website has information not just about what they do, but about the ideas behind them. There are also wonderful weblinks to others in the social enterprise field.

Fiscal Sponsor Information

A relatively small number of foundations award grants directly to individuals, while the vast majority limit their funding to nonprofit organizations. If you are seeking support for a project but are not affiliated with a nonprofit, you may increase your chances of securing foundation support if you can find a nonprofit organization that will serve as your project's fiscal sponsor.  In this type of arrangement, a nonprofit acts as an individual’s fiscal agent, receiving and administering the grant for a small percentage of the funds.

Internal Revenue Service

This is a surprisingly helpful and user-friendly website, especially considering the source.  You can download all the forms and instructions you need to file for your tax-exempt status with the IRS or you fill out the forms online and submit them.  There are links to all the other forms you will need, including an application for an EIN (Employer Identification Number) and Form 8718, User Fee for Exempt Organization Determination Letter Request.  Yes, there's a form to accompany the fee you will pay to submit your tax-exempt application.

Nolo Law for All

Nolo publishes the definitive guide on how to start a California nonprofit corporation called The California Nonprofit Corporation Kit. The Foundation Center

Are you ready to be funded?
This is a useful self-assessment tool to complete when you are planning your nonprofit.  It is based on a study by La Piana Associates Inc, published by Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) in 2003, entitled “Tool for Assessing Startup Organizations – a due diligence supplement for grantmakers.” The CBO Center added additional questions to this assessment.
